Chapter Fourteen

Lady Monroe dressed Liana in the finest gown she owned, which happened to be a navy silken gown with heavy layers to add volume to the bottom. Luckily, there was no petticoat beneath this gown because they were impossible to sit in. Phillipa structured her dark strands into a crown of braids atop her head, leaving her slender neck on display along with the iridescent string of pearls resting along her skin.

Liana added her own small touches of makeup to enhance the color in her cheeks and bolden her eyes with a thin line of coal. Charlotte and Hannah looked pretty in their muted gowns of grey and brown. They wore only thin gold necklaces, and their hair was simple. Everything about them looked simple compared to Liana. Lady Monroe designed them that way so the king’s eyes would only favor Liana. The woman was diabolical, but Liana had to admit she was smart for doing so.

Once they arrived at the castle, their guards following, they were brought to a sitting room to wait for everyone’s arrival. The ladies sat on the sofas while the males stood about inspecting and commenting on the trinkets and décor about the room. Master Ranville and Lord Dietrich arrived together and were served drinks. Shortly after, King Ashwood arrived, and they were led to the formal dining room. The same style of the stone castle permeated this room as well with arched walkways and alcoves while the length of the far wall consisted entirely of windows. It made for a stunning backdrop to their dinner with the mountains as their scenery.

Seating arrangements were preset by society which meant Lord Monroe sat to the king’s left followed by Wesley, Carlisle and William. To the king’s right sat Master Ranville and Lord Dietrich. The ladies were left to fill in the remaining seats. Lady Monroe sat beside Lord Dietrich followed by Charlotte and Liana. Hannah sat on the opposite side beside William. Liana hated that this put her so far away from the king but hated even more that they were put last in the pecking order.

Servants brought the first course of a roasted tomato soup which Liana sipped properly yet quickly as her stomach grumbled.

“How are the wolf shifters after suffering such a loss?” Lord Monroe questioned, getting into the political talk. The ladies stayed silent as was expected.

“They are mourning in their way. Once the mourning period is over, they will select the next Beta.”

“Such a terrible loss for the community,” Master Ranville chimed in. “Do you yet know who is behind the attacks?” he questioned, his voice loud and expectant.

“Not quite. As best we can tell, they are a group of rogues.”

“Do you mean rebels?” Master Ranville countered. “Could they be making a resurgence after the last rebellion?”

Liana’s curiosity perked. Damien wouldn’t tell her much yesterday, and it looked as though he did not enjoy talking about it now either. To the untrained eye he probably looked unperturbed, but Liana made it a point to study every twitch the king made.
